Richard Strauss' dazzling opera Der Rosenkavalier is set in 1740's Vienna.
This opulent production by Oscar - winning film director John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) marked the 25th anniversary of Sir Georg Solti's spectacular debut at Covent Garden, conducting this very opera. It also features Kiri Te Kanawa's first performance in London of the role of Marschallin, which “deserves to be ranked among her finest achievements” (International Herald Tribune).
