In the second work of Richard Wagner's epic cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen, Wotan faces the consequences of his actions, begun in Das Rheingold, while his daughter Brunnhilde emerges as the heroic voice of the conscience he strives to silence. Struggles of power mix with adulterous and incestuous love in an episode of dramatic vengeance.
Filmed at Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu in 2003, Harry Kupfer's acclaimed production, first staged in Berlin, numbers among the greatest productions of modern times and is recorded in sumptuous surround sound.
This is a 3 DVD set!
"Any production of this epic work is an event...This is an excellent version, not old-fashioned or perverse, visually a mixture of realistic and abstract, but mythic and timeless and very moving."
- Barcelona Business (performance review)
"[Deborah Polaski] is a mistress of the grand heroic manner, something I had almost despaired of encountering again…she is a supreme listener. To see her while another character is singing is to be made to concentrate much more intensely oneself. A great performance. I would unhesitatingly say that this is the best visual realization of Die Walküre on DVD (or video) that I have seen."
- International Record Review
"The cast has been carefully assembled and they work well as a team, both dramatically and musically. Falk Struckmann is a strongly characterised Wotan who creates a more than one-dimensional response to the role, while Deborah Polaski’s interpretation of Brünnhilde generates great intensity. She remains a leading Wagnerian singer of our time."

"...the crepuscular stage is dominated by the limbs of the massive World-Ash tree. It’s a powerful image for the natural world, corrupted now by the metal of human technology. It’s good to have a DVD version to recommend that’s both theatrically modern, yet true to Wagner’s directions."
