Gazzaniga's librettist, Giovanni Bertati had studied many of the 18th century Don Juan plays, and from them incorporated several elements, especially from the version by Moliere as well as features of teh story found in popular tradition. Gazzaniga's Don Giovanni Tenorio introduces four female 'victims': Donna Anna (who is to be found in Tirso's Spanish setting of the play), Donna Elvira and Maturina (from the version by Moliere) and Donna Ximena.
