This beautiful Soviet motion picture of Peter Tchaikovsky’s endearing opera is now available to enjoy again and again on DVD. Using the sights and sounds of old St. Petersburg, director Roman Tikhomirov “opened up” the opera and filmed it in the Russian countryside, using actors, singers and musicians from the Bolshoi Theatre and Opera.
