Le Villi was first produced on May 31, 1884 in Dal Verme Theatre, Milan, after it had been rejected in a prize competition at the Milan Conservatory, but revised to two-acts by the composer with the aid of Boito. It was Puccini's first work for the lyric stage. Sung in Italian.
